Working with high school, middle school, and even elementary school-aged students on discovering their creative writing talent is one of my passions. I started writing poetry when I was eleven years old, and through the support of my amazing high school English teacher at my public high school in Buffalo, New York, I continued to pursue creative writing as an outlet for understanding the world, exploring new emotions, and of course, dealing with the weirdness that is high school.
I provide intensive, individualized coaching on fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction (like memoir, personal essay, and experimental forms). My goal is to not only push each student creatively but to give them the tools and resources to continue improving their writing craft.
The writing we work on does not have to be for a school assignment! We can work towards a personal goal, perhaps completing the Nanowrimo challenge, or writing a short story you feel proud of. For those interested in putting their writing “out there,” we can use my growing resource list and my contacts in the professional writing and education worlds to find contests, magazines, newspapers, or blogs to guide our writing projects. For example, the Scholastic Awards are a wonderful, nationally recognized creative writing contest. (There are art and journalism categories as well.) If you would like to enter the Scholastic Writing Awards while working with me, you can enter my name as your community instructor. For essayists and avid readers, I highly recommend the Letters About Literature contest, sponsored by the Library of Congress.
With so many options for communicating, I aim to be as flexible as I can with your preferences. Don’t like talking on the phone? We can message through Google Chat. The only free time you have is the thirty minutes in between your Amnesty International meeting and Club Volleyball on Wednesdays? We can set up re-occurring text conversations.
I charge a flat rate of $60/hour to work with individual students, which can be divided up into smaller time periods depending on how you want to interact with me. Ready to book? Send me an email at sizemorepov [at] gmail [dot] com.
For talented high school students with the goal of becoming professional creative writers, I have limited availability for long-term mentoring. If interested, I ask that we work on a few projects first to make sure that our writing relationship will be a good fit.
I also frequently look for camp or small group opportunities to share my love of writing with K-12 students. Feel free to contact me with group inquiries or guest speaking.
